Giving Thanks For Less

Giving Thanks For Less
“Is this all?” asks the baggage attendant.

“Yep,” I nod as I look down toward the small carry-on sized suitcase at my feet.

Unbelievably, it’s true: for the next month, this is all I’ll bring with me. I’ll travel through Thailand with less on my skin, less in my (non-existent) closet, and less in my bank account than ever before.

I left my “real job” this past spring. I no longer have any one fixed place to call home or any one person to call my own. Today more than ever, I’m living with far less “certainty” of what the future might bring.

And yet in this place of “less” I’ve found so much more: Less surface and more depth. Less numbness and more joy. Less bondage and so much more freedom.
When I’m at my stillest, I know that there is a fundamental sufficiency, a “more” that can never be experienced by adding to, but only by stripping away.

And so this Thanksgiving (and always), I wish this for you, too:
Less of the more that is never-enough.
More of the less that is always-enough.
And the silent knowing that in this moment,
just
this
breath
is enough.
