Effective Prospecting: Quality Over Quantity
Effective Prospecting: Quality Over Quantity
from
Miller Heiman.com
Prospecting-Quality-Over-Quantity
Think about how many times since you began selling you heard someone
say, “I wish I’d never closed that order.” And then consider how many
times you’ve said it yourself. Why does this happen? Because the sales
professional allowed himself to believe that it’s quantity, not quality,
that counts, and so ended up selling to a customer with a nonexistent
match to their product or service. Learn how creating an “Ideal Customer
Profile” will help you separate your best prospects from the ones who
will prove to be liabilities. The Ideal Customer Profile’s aim is really twofold: to anticipate problems in your current customer base, and as a sorting device that will help you cut down on those prospects you probably shouldn’t be working with in the first place—leaving you with a shorter but real prospects’ list. Your own personal Ideal Customer Profile will be based on your current and past accounts; you can then use that profile to test the real prospects of a winning sale with all of your current sales objectives.
-
Create your Ideal Customer Profile. Make five columns with the following subheadings:
- Best Customers
- Characteristics of Best
- Ideal Customer Profile
- Characteristics of Worst
- Worst Customers
- Identify your best customers. List your best current and past customers, not prospects—be sure to limit yourself to accounts where you’ve already done business. Concentrate on those accounts that have given you the maximum number of wins and minimal trouble.
- Identify your worst customers. List your worst past and current customers. Concentrate on those accounts where either you or the customer—or both of you—have lost even though you’ve closed the order.
- List best customer characteristics. List those characteristics that are common or unique to the “best customers” you’ve just identified.
- List worst customer characteristics. List those characteristics that are common or unique to the “worst customers” you’ve just identified.
- Create your Ideal Customer Profile. Study the lists you’ve just made of “best customer” and “worst customer” characteristics and distill out of those items a new list of characteristics you consider the most significant to put in your Ideal Customer Profile column. (Note: When assessing “worst” characteristics list, your takeaway will be the opposite of the significant items listed there, i.e., if a common characteristic of your “worst customers” is that they’re “unable to make decisions,” write in the ICP column something like, “Has a process for making buying decisions quickly.”) Then zero in on the five most significant characteristics. These five characteristics will form your Ideal Customer Profile.
- Test your current accounts. Measure a current account you’re working on against each of your five ICP characteristics, asking yourself for each one, “How well does this particular customer match with this ideal characteristic”?
You now have a useful screening tool for both sorting your prospects and anticipating problems. Once you know how close (or not) a given account is to your Ideal Customer Profile, you’ll be in a better position to make a decision about how to improve your strategy for that account.

Honesty
"It is a well known fact...Vulcans do not lie," as Spock said in many Star Trek episodes.
Being honest is my #1 rule of sales.
never-lie-to-client
On a recent sales call a prospect said to me the number one rule she has when building a relationship with the recruiter or staffing firm is if the recruiter is honest.
Being in the staffing industry I'm amazed how many clients and candidates think recruiters are being dishonest. It almost seems recruiters fall somewhere in between life insurance salespeople and used car salespeople on society's stereotype pantheon of "people you don't want to believe (For the record I also worked in advertising sales and door-to-door vacuum cleaner sales, two more on that infamous pantheon)."
Yes, there are scuzzy recruiters out there just like in any profession.
That isn't true for the vast majority of people in this profession.
Almost all of the recruiters I know are solid professionals who have the best interests of their candidates and clients in mind. Insurance, cars, radio ads, vacuum cleaners are an easy sell compared to the recruiting industry.
Recruiters deal in the toughest commodity to explain, demonstrate, and control...people. Recruiters also have to make two sales for every candidate placed in a job. One sale is made to the candidate that they should apply for the job, and the other is to the client that their candidate is indeed the best person for the job. That is why being a recruiter is the toughest sales job I've ever experienced.
why-recruiting-is-toughest-sales-job
I agree with my prospect that honesty is the key to a good relationship, however I want to focus on a part of this problem that people outside of the recruiting industry might not understand. Honesty is a two way street and requires the client company to also provide honest information about the position they are looking to fill and the person they want to fill it. It also requires the candidate to be honest about their intentions and goals as well.
How many times as a client have you heard a recruiter say "we can fill that position" and then never hear from the recruiter again?
How many times as a recruiter have you heard a client say "it's not about the skills they have but if they are a culture fit," and in the end it really was about the skills.
How many times as a recruiter or client have you heard a candidate say "it's not about the money, it's about..." and then when you present the offer you find out the candidate accepted an offer for $2,000 more even though the benefits, schedule, life balance, etc., is better at your company than the place they accepted?
I guess it was about the money after all.
Sometimes you as a recruiter CAN'T fill a job order.
Sometimes as a client you just need someone who CAN DO the job, and although culture fit is ideal, pressures or deadlines dictate you just need someone with the right skills.
Sometimes as a candidate it IS about the money.
It is okay to share these things with each other!
Good recruiters aren't making up stories when they contact a candidate and are full of enthusiasm for the job. Good recruiters have asked the client enough questions and probed deep into the needs of the job, that they believe the candidate they are contacting can indeed be the solution to the client's open position. The disconnect comes in when a client, candidate, or recruiter says one thing (or doesn't say something) to the other party and it doesn't work out, and that makes everyone look foolish and wastes time.
Let's all drop the deflector screens and provide each other the information needed to help each other succeed.
My tagline for many years now is "A Heck of A Nice Guy."
I don't think you can be nice person without being honest.
Just waving a little flag for me with the above comment. LOL!
Thanks for reading!

When you are sitting across from a candidate or client, how do you recognize if they have bought what you are telling them?

Years ago, I sat in a meeting with a couple of executives in Austin, Texas. I had not uncovered any really compelling reasons for them to change course. Even though one of the executives was the sole source of new business for the company, and their six sales reps were posting goose eggs, they felt good about their company and their direction. They either weren't comfortable opening up to me, or were oblivious to their concentration issue. However, one of the partners asked me what it would cost to help them.
Sensing that a discussion of money at this point was premature, I instead asked, "Well, are you sure you want my help?" He sort of laughed and replied, "When someone asks about price, that's usually a buying signal." Got me on that one. And he invoked old-school sales terminology, to boot. Prospect -2, Adam - 0.

- Leaning forward or changing their posture
- Smiling, or making more direct eye contact
- Making "interested" sounds (I'm not kidding)
- Asking about price, warranties, or guarantees
- Asking for a demo. Or asking for a second demo
- Asking very detailed questions about your offering
What works much more effectively than a sales ouija board or magic 8 ball is getting simple answers to straight questions. Elite sellers find out, from the prospect, answers to the following:
- Why are you looking?
- What else are you considering?
- Why have you not bought those?
- When do you need it? Why then?
- Do you think we can help?
- Do you want our help?
- Do you have the money? Will you spend it? Under what conditions?
What tools are your people using to qualify or disqualify opportunities?

More Funny Job Ads
I've written thousands of job ads over the course of my career (on this blog there are several places to find my advice on what makes an effective recruitment ad). Some time ago I posted some of the most clever ads and some with funny mistakes.

Below are some more examples. Bravo to those who came up with the clever ideas, and thanks for the laughs for the ones who made the unintentional mistakes.

This ad campaign has gotten Dice a ton of publicity, especially in California where drivers get a chuckle while stuck in traffic.
Funny and clever!
I've had internships like this. In the creative world you have to take jobs like this to break into the industry. At least it's honest!
Crude as it is, it gets attention.
Math + lack of proofreading = comedy
Inventive.
Now we know the secret about how the coffee is made in these machines
Who hasn't wanted to at least once?
I wonder if sharks with lasers on them are involved?
I'm not sure what they were trying to say. "Salad" maybe?

five-writing-tips-that-can-double-your-salary
Thanks Bruce! This is definitely true!

Bruce Kasanoff
Entrepreneur. Writer. Speaker.
Co-author of Smart Customers, Stupid Companies. Every person matters.
It is impossible to overstate how much we rely on written words to get what we want.
Are you making your writing as powerful as possible?
By improving your writing, you will change the arc of your career. You can literally double or triple your salary, because effective leaders get paid much more than "muddled thinkers."
Your first reaction may be to doubt my salary claim, but let's start with your resume.
A well-written one can be the difference between a big job and a dead-end one. Now consider what you do for a living... effective writing can make a huge difference. For example, a researcher who can write effectively might get five or even ten times as many grants over the course of her career.
If you are an up-and-coming leader, the ability to use words to motivate others can easily double your rate of advancement. We all know people who are obviously intelligent, but just can't seem to consistently offer a series of actionable recommendations. Such people aren't worth nearly as much as their colleagues who communicate with clarity.
Print out this "business writing cheat sheet" and use it whenever you have to create a powerful document... even if it is just a short email:
1.) Have a repeatable message. Most of the stuff you read has no clear message, which makes it nearly impossible to repeat. In our digital age, being easily repeated is the difference between fame and forgotten.
To give you one example, search engines put clear and focused pieces much higher than random and rambling ones; this fact impacts all business writing, even pieces that will never be posted online.
Creating repeatable messages is one thing it takes to deliver on the premise of my headline. In most companies, it takes more than one person's agreement to double your salary. The people who control your fate must be able to easily grasp both your messages as well as the value you add.
Ask yourself: why am I writing this piece? What do I want the reader to learn? Even more importantly, what do I want the reader to do after reading what I wrote?
2.) Know your audience. If you write everything in the same style, you are - sorry - an ineffective writer. You must adapt your style and approach to match the needs of the people you wish to influence.
The odds are that your boss doesn't think like your subordinates, or your friends. The people in Accounting don't think like the people in Marketing.
Some of us like facts and figures, others crave stories. To get a message into someone's brain, you have to package it in a form they can process. For some people, that means using 100 words or less; for others, it means including three pages of support materials.
Ask yourself: who is going to read this, and how do they think? To get a clue, re-read anything they have sent to you.
3.) Be powerful, not passive. Powerful professionals DO things; they don't sit passively while others take action. But huge numbers of professionals write in the passive tense, like this:
After careful consideration, our department's new operating policy was approved this morning by the management team.
What a lousy way to try to get others excited. Far better to write:
We just created five simple principles to make daily life in our department easier and simpler.
Whenever you write, show people how and why to take action. Demonstrate that you are doing the same. Empower others. Get them moving ahead.
4.) Use examples. Without examples, your words are little more than abstract thoughts, and most people ignore abstract thoughts. There are good reasons for this; we all have daily pressures, and if you don't know how to implement an idea, it isn't useful to you.
Examples show readers how to implement your ideas.
If you are suggesting that your boss approve a new expense, tell him or her why the expense is such a good investment and give examples of how it will support your group's goals.
Every year in my town, the Board of Education fights for more money from the Board of Finance. And every year, concerned parents stand up and give heartfelt examples of how children will be hurt if the school budget is cut. Such stories don't always work, but without them our school budget would be much smaller than it is today.
5.) Use more pictures and fewer words. There's a reason why nearly every LinkedIn article starts with an image; more people read articles with images.
The same is true for nearly every document. Some people think in pictures, others in words. If you fail to include pictures, you will fail to reach some people. Plus, you can use images to draw attention to your key points.
Just as importantly, don't waste words. In fact, you might want to write "don't waste words" right above the screen on all your digital devices. I'm serious. Only use as many words as is necessary to get your point across clearly, and no more.
Bonus tip... write at least three drafts! People hate this tip, but the hard reality is that you need to rewrite your first draft, and to keep rewriting until you've accomplished all five of these tips.
I write at least three drafts of everything, even emails. When I violate this principle, I regret it. By regret, I mean: years ago, not rewriting cost me a raise, it cost me more than one client, and it cost me some friends.
Rewriting doesn't require hours of time. You can rewrite a short email in two minutes. Don't skip this step! The more you polish your words, the higher your career will soar.
For those of you who prefer images to words, here's a visual version of this article...

Summary
I was 11 when I took the journeyman electricians entrance test, and passed.
I began my professional life moving pipes during high school, then bailing and livestock production for Hurtt Ranch and Martin Herefords.
I attended Autobody school in Billings where I was trained in automotive by Sears. I ran the Billings garage alone on Sundays and attended college full time. I took Autobody because I couold afford it, and I was already interested sending my winters at Sweeny Creek inside Warren Hutcheson's garage which is now and has been in East Missoula for years. I worked for Spray Craft after graduation in Missoula and left Sears with a serious eye injury. With that injury I did the rest of my life and went to Phoenix to attend Architectural Drafting and Design. Before graduation I was hired by Foley Wismer and Becker as an electirical designer at Hanford WPPSS Nuclear 1&4. I would as-built an area sent to, draw that up, then add motors and switches, wiring on runways mounted with Hilti to concrete and steel.
I went to work at Fox Ballas and Barrow Architects the following summer and took over for a good friend and Architect in Missoula Montana. Today Jay Kirby and I are still friends even though I finished the Arlee's housing project he left behind. It was an honor to design homes I have seen often underneath the water tower and knowing where each and every house in that phase sits in the valley. It was a tremendous honor to work with Oscar Ballas and his son Jerry.
I worked for T&T Construction doing all weather wood foundations the following summer and then as-built all the parks in Missoula the next. The following year I moved to Santa Monica employed by Morris Group Architects Long Beach as an Architectural designer then Job Captain. I worked for Simpson Engineering in Structures adding to my concrete tilt-up experience.
I returned to classes in Autocad and became a 3D Designer Programmer.

broke mid-back area in multiple locations, tearing ligaments which prevents me from continuing my career. I cant run a mouse 5 minutes, I need it 16 hours a day as I used to. The negligence by L&I caused other injuries I did not possess at the time of the first injury. Later that doctor testified he and his partner both treated me with chiropractic care on a broken vertebrae It left permanent damage but I didn't know about it until it was too lat. Workmen comp claims a cop beat me up and broke the ACL and meniscus in my left knee. News to me, no medical evidence exists to support. Medical malpractice and fraud has occurred but who do I report that to?
I medically require a C4,C5,C6 and C7 ACDF, listed as a "Significant Neck Fracture". Medicare is suppose to pay for something L&I created with Negligence?
When L&I illegally closed the first claim, because the doctor didn't see the T7 fracture which they now claim did exist, which there is no medical evidence to support, it created the following 5 claims. My right rotator cuff is completely torn off now, so it must have begun then. I cannot get out of the bathtub by myself, and I require a full time attendant and cant have one.
Isn't insurance fraud included when L&I then told the doctors to Bill Medicare?
I was insured by Blue Cross Blue Shield at the time and had been with them for almost 30 years.
For the past 11 years I have been made a slave to Labor and Industries. L&I is a crooked system based on illegal activities from their employees who does what the governor and attorney general order them to do. I invite them to sue me for saying so! Since they have already destroyed my life and my career, I have nothing left to lose.

My mother called my bosses with lies and had me fired. I cant tell you how happy I am she died. Now I spent 30 years helping others have their dreams come true, so Law enforcement could steal all of mine. I have some traffic tickets I refuse to ever pay, for that would be considered extortion. I never had any peace at my work, for as soon as my mother located my employment she was able to have me fired. I've long since quit trying so I can die without anymore embarrassment. I will be most happy when someone blows Police chief Mike Brady's head off his worthless shoulders. I mean that with my entire heart, since his hate has stolen my love for helping people. When I try something new, he seems to use a police computer to hunt me. I am now an advocate for Interstate Stalking. If we had such a law, actress Rebecca Shaefer may still be alive. Mike Brady has got to be the most ignorant human being on earth. I resign all my christianity to lower him into the ground, for he wouldn't know a victim if he saw one.

I was asked to pick up a very ;large computer monitor by my boss Alan Murray, Obviously he as far too fat to lift anything. I was asked to carry it across the room and move it. As I sat it down I tore my right rotator cuff in 3 places(you each have four) broke my T7 Vertabrae, My right collar bone and my breast plate leaving me paralyzed in my right arm, the one I draw with. Alan Murray PE later lied through his teeth the labor and Industries so he didn't have to pay for my injuries. He went bankrupt and moved to the city of Everett. He was a worthless employer. The worst I ever had. He stole my career so he could keep is cabin. The girl I replaced told me she was leaving because of his sexual harassment she could not stop, with the secretary about 6 feet from her on the others side of the wall. Alan ran one type of computer in his office, expected my to run mine in Autocad/Microsoft and then convert it to his format so he could see it, review it, then put it back in AutoCAD and fix it. This was a recipe for disaster. Alan went bankrupt simply because he was a stupid fool. He was a fat pig no one should ever respect! Once I got hurt the dr gave me Darvocet. I had the secretary lock them up in her file cabinet so they didn't get stolen, I never took one of them but they told L&I that I was a drug addict. I have a hundred witnesses who will tell you I do not take narcotics. Pills didn't break me, they certainly cant fix me. A liar named Alan Murray has killed me. Then he got the Washington Attorney General to protect himself for paying me anymore. From 2001 to 2014 L&I paid me roughly 3300$ in lost wages. I am out $650,000 in wages and I owe over $450,000 in medical expenses, left a vegetable unable to use both hands to type.

Quilceda Engineering, Inc.

Computer systems management, Lisp programmer, Menu creator, Civil Engineering designer. I was hired by Greggars Krabbe at DVE Engineers. In a think tank one day I offered we should create an office with a Civil Engineer, Land Planner, Structural Engineer, Surveyor, Architect and drafters all in one room. My boss and the surveyor liked that idea and Quilceda was born from multiple companies we pushed into one room. I designed the last 5 or 6 projects myself after the mismanagement of naval contracts went bust and bankrupt our company. Since creating this was my idea, I turned the last projects sign by the engineer into the building department and turned in the keys long after we had moved out. I was so heartbroken we had failed at this wonderful idea. I got tired of seeing people bicker who was right, who was wrong. I put them in one room, we solved all those bickering problems, but one of those projects for the Navy had been draw wrong and the 3d levels and pieces all exploded to lay flat or askew on paper. As hard as I tried there was no recovering the 3d data in which we needed to design by and a pie running 45 feet from the other end measured over 900 in length as it sat askew, each pipe got worse. I fired each of the personnel from that group, and we closed that file which bankrupt the company. The owner of that company made sure my boss paid him to go on vacation, he should have been left there. We could no longer connect the dots. This office worked and worked well, we were just simply lied to by ignorant people who didn't know how to run an engineering office. I left with all my programming intact. No one ever wisely used my work again. That's their loss, never will be mine. I own that program and its on CDrom. I had preprogrammed all of the drafting actions into simplified one key or one button commands and submenus using my college program PoolCad.

Computer aided 3D modeling formed from design, based on allowable space allotted on-site. Then converted the 3D model into designated plans and blueprints for construction through on-site construction supervision and inspections. I designed the apartment complex that replaced the Pang Warehouse after the fire that killed my friend Randy. It was an extremely difficult time for me. s this went on my mother made numerous phone calls to 911 reporting me as a criminal which was never true. She claimed I demanded a raise 3 days after starting and if I didn't get it I would bomb the bosses building. I retired and took the work to my own home(a fifth wheel) where it was completed and we were all safer this way. We moved into the 5th wheel for our own safety that when those calls came, and the dual state restraining orders I possessed were being refused to be upheld. The 5th wheel gave me the capability to move in just an hours notice instead of continually losing ,my possession when my nutcase mother would get drunk, hallucinate and call police on those she hated the most, her children. My mother killed my baby brother in 1967 the night after she threatened my father she would because she assumed he had cheated on her. That also was a lie. She eventually destroyed my wonderful career and had my body broken to unrepair. I now sit in devastation, they blame me for. I am just one of her hundreds of victims. The Police refuse to investigate, so they can haunt my life. I recently moved out of Missoula Montana at gunpoint, the same way I left Everett Washington. On January 12 2014 Missoula Police threatened to kill my medical caretaker who I've been with since 2003 because she wouldn't let them arrest me for more false crimes, She instantly quit her tenure position and we moved out of Missoula for our own safety. My drawings made it to the newspaper.

Wrote the entire Lisp program to design the lighting in 3d for the Seahawks stadium, which worked beautifully, so they had me write one for the seating, another for the roof, then the Atrium, then all the TV monitors and all electrical. I sold the program to another Architect who designed the Rubber Band-Birds Nest in Bejing for the Olympics. This program I wrote all started from my college years when I wrote it to design Swimming Pools in 3d, which made me a corporate office manager. I sold that program to buy a sailboat and vacationed to Hawaii. I spent less than 6 hours drawing on the Seahawks stadium. In all the building took a little over 6 weeks to design. R.I.P. Mel Streeter. Our families went back to the early 1800's together. I had all his families genealogy in my personal belongings. I had answers Mel had searched for all his life in a notebook left to me by Sequoyah.

Got out of jail, went and got me a new job. Designed the Belgrade KOA while I trained the drafters below me. Ran into Jamie Hoffman in the hallway who come to see mark West, was fired immediately on his lies. I was given a letter of recommendation and sent on my way, yet I had done nothing wrong whatsoever and it was all based on lies. Jobs are hard to come by. Then I was told my mother had made numerous phone calls at 3am to my supervisor Jeff Maphis. He wrote me a letter explaining my mothers complaints we could not stop. I was never respected enough to get the harassment calls to stop. I am the victim and have been since 1964.

I had this offer to learn structures, so I went there and designed a building along the Nimitz freeway, a Concrete tilt up warehouse building I was designing for Morris Group. After the earth quake, this was the only building standing next to the collapsed double decker freeway. The concrete at each entrance staggered out and over glass in two lifts until it met the other side. The back side was loading docks next to the railway. I am so very proud of this building and wether Bill Simpson knows it or not, I owe him a great deal for that blessed opportunity.

designing electrical runs from switches to machines. Did you know there was a man and his wheel barrow buried in the 12 foot thick walls of plant 4? I tried to avoid that spot of the 27 story plant. There is just as much underground as there is above ground. My office was at -4 level.
I loved this job and would gladly do it again! I designed CASP runs, Used Hilti and a multiple of hanger systems to run conduit. God Blessed me greatly with this position. Upon notice of my pink slip, my newlywed wife left me for another man who hadn't lost his job at Hanford 2.
My last day I took two drafters and scaled the nuclear walls from the outside with rope and camera to shoot a roundabout from the dome. Ropes and cameras are not allowed inside the check gate.
One day I was looking for an engineer. I located him in the basement atop a piece of equipment where he had overdosed from Heroin. I didn't work that level after that day. Hanford was a management nightmare for chronic drug users and alcoholics. My boss and his company was eventually sued for Bid Rigging. I saw great things, and tons of tragedy. I had really good friends here, couldn't trust one of them except those two drafters.

How to Recruit Millennials
Top notch IT talent.
We’re all looking for new superstars.I thought you might find this interesting from Resource1.com about how to recruit from Generation Y (a.k.a. Millennials) and their differences between Generation X and Boomers:
Everet
A Heck of A Nice Guy
4 Things Your Company Can Do To Attract Millennial IT Talent
by Anastasia C. Valentine
With the IT unemployment rate at 2-3% in most states, many companies are facing the most challenging times in managing an IT workforce since the late 90s. To confound current market conditions, you have to attract and hire from a pool of three diverse generations: Baby Boomers, Generation X and Millennials. While Millennials are often noted for being a challenging bunch, you have to properly integrate them into your current workforce and foster a unified work environment for all three generations.
Understanding the key differences between the three generations is a great starting point to help you facilitate a cohesive workplace. According to Vivian Giang from “Business Insider:
- Baby Boomers are loyal, hardworking, team players. They place importance on healthcare and retirement. They also are the least adaptable of the three generations.
- Generation X are effective managers, adaptable, great at solving problems and put an emphasis on workplace flexibility. However, they have the least executive presence of the three.
- Millennials are tech savvy and enthusiastic about their jobs. More than the other two generations, they want to know how and when they can get promoted. However, they’re not big team players.
Graphic from the Business Insider (http://www.businessinsider.com/how-millennials-gen-x-and-boomers-shape-the-workplace-2013-9)
Now that you have some more insight into the different generations, let’s look at 4 things you can do to better recruit technical Millennials to your company.
1.) Corporate Culture and ResponsibilityMillennials have a different view than Baby Boomers and Generation X of what corporate life should be. They don’t want to be a piece of a big corporate puzzle. They want to feel that they are making a difference in the overall business. In your own IT department, you should show your employees how the projects they’re working on help the organization as a whole. Millennials also want infrastructure to get the job done – with technology and connectivity, not cubicles and lunchrooms. Corporate social responsibility is also something that Millennials value. According to a recent Towers Watson study, 71% of Millennials want to work for a company that encourages some form of global or community social responsibility. Your company should be communicative about their role in the community and what organizations they support.
2.) Flexibility and Mobility
Where Generation X finds flexibility important, so do the Millennials. The recent Millennials and the Future of Work report found 84% of Millennial workers in traditionally well-paid corporate roles would quit in order to pursue more flexible options. IT Millennials have gone through college wooed by stories about start-up companies with flexible work schedules. Also, being the first generation to grow up with PC’s and the Internet, this tech-savvy generation has the capabilities, equipment and knowledge to successfully work from home. If you don’t have one already, consider a flex-time plan and a work from home policy. Implementing these two things could have a meaningful impact on your recruiting efforts not only for Millennials, but for Generation X as well.
3.) Inspired to Learn
A recent survey conducted by JobBuzz found 27% of Millennial workers most wanted their boss to be a good motivator. They value someone who is understanding, encouraging and hands-off. Millennials in IT want responsibility and the opportunity to wow their leadership. Brian Halligan, CEO of Hubspot, says “I take these young kids and I give them huge responsibility. Sometimes they mess it up, but more often than not they get it right.” When hiring, make sure you communicate not only the types of responsibilities they will have, but also what they can expect to learn from you, as a manager and their role in the department.
4.) Opportunity to Grow
Tech Millennials want to grow their careers just as much as any generation. Baby Boomers and Gen X are established in their careers paths and know what they want to get out of their job. Millennials are still finding their way in the corporate world and could change their direction at any time. Many firms have taken to implementing certain programs and policies in order to help attract and retain Millennials. For example, Hubspot makes sure that there is a certain percentage of employees changing departments or jobs every three months to keep their Millennial employees interested in their work. When recruiting, it’s important to give your IT Millennials insight into the various aspects of technology at your company and give them the opportunity to change their career path if so desired.
Some employers have expressed concerns that Millennials expect too much from their workplace. That concern has made many companies research Millennials to learn how to best manage them and to also understand how to make Baby Boomers, Gen Xers and Millennials understand each other. For example, Goldman Sachs hires actors to portray Millennials in the workplace and then has management analyze the generational differences.
By 2025, 75% of the global workforce will be the Millennial generation. In order to attract them and keep them committed to a stable career with your company, the most important thing you can do is to understand them. Knowing their strengths, weakness and what is important to them will help you develop a cohesive, blended workforce and attract this new generation of workers.

9 Cutting Edge Programming Languages
When reading this article I had only heard of three of the
new languages.
I thought you might find this interesting from CIO.com:9-cutting-edge-programming-languages

The big languages are popular for a reason: They offer a huge foundation of open source code, libraries, and frameworks that make finishing the job easier. This is the result of years of momentum in which they are chosen time and again for new projects, and expertise in their nuances grow worthwhile and plentiful.
Sometimes the vast resources of the popular, mainstream programming
languages aren’t enough to solve your particular problem. Sometimes you have to
look beyond the obvious to find the right language, where the right structure
makes the difference while offering that extra feature to help your code run
significantly faster without endless tweaking and optimizing. This language
produces vastly more stable and accurate code because it prevents you from
programming sloppy or wrong code.
The world is filled with thousands of clever languages that aren't C#, Java,
or JavaScript. Some are treasured by only a few, but many have flourishing
communities connected by a common love for the language's facility in solving
certain problems. There may not be tens of millions of programmers who know the
syntax, but sometimes there is value in doing things a little different, as
experimenting with any new language can pay significant dividends on future
projects.
The following nine languages should be on every programmer’s radar. They may
not be the best for every job -- many are aimed at specialized tasks. But they
all offer upsides that are worth investigating and investing in. There may be a
day when one of these languages proves to be exactly what your project -- or
boss -- needs.
Erlang: Functional
programming for real-time systems
Erlang began deep inside the spooky realms of telephone switches at Ericsson, the Swedish telco. When Ericsson programmers began bragging about its "nine 9s" performance, by delivering 99.9999999 percent of the data with Erlang, the developers outside Ericsson started taking notice.
Erlang’s secret is the functional paradigm. Most of the code is forced to operate in its own little world where it can't corrupt the rest of the system through side effects. The functions do all their work internally, running in little "processes" that act like sandboxes and only talk to each other through mail messages. You can't merely grab a pointer and make a quick change to the state anywhere in the stack. You have to stay inside the call hierarchy. It may require a bit more thought, but mistakes are less likely to propagate.
The model also makes it simpler for runtime code to determine what can run at the same time. With concurrency so easy to detect, the runtime scheduler can take advantage of the very low overhead in setting up and ripping down a process. Erlang fans like to brag about running 20 million "processes" at the same time on a Web server.
If you're building a real-time system with no room for dropped data, such as a billing system for a mobile phone switch, then check out Erlang.
Google wasn’t the first organization to survey the collection of languages, only to find them cluttered, complex, and often slow. In 2009, the company released its solution: a statically typed language that looks like C but includes background intelligence to save programmers from having to specify types and juggle malloc calls. With Go, programmers can have the terseness and structure of compiled C, along with the ease of using a dynamic script language.
While Sun and Apple followed a similar path in creating Java and Swift, respectively, Google made one significantly different decision with Go: The language’s creators wanted to keep Go "simple enough to hold in one programmer's head." Rob Pike, one of Go’s creators, famously told Ars Technica that "sometimes you can get more in the long run by taking things away." Thus, there are few zippy extras like generics, type inheritance, or assertions, only clean, simple blocks of if-then-else code manipulating strings, arrays, and hash tables.
The language is reportedly well-established inside of Google's vast empire and is gaining acceptance in other places where dynamic-language lovers of Python and Ruby can be coaxed into accepting some of the rigor that comes from a compiled language.
If you're a startup trying to catch Google's eye and need to build some server-side business logic, Go is a great place to start.
Groovy: Scripting
goodness for Java
The Java
world is surprisingly flexible. Say what you will about its
belts-and-suspenders approach, like specifying the type for every variable,
ending every line with a semicolon, and writing access methods for classes that
simply return the value. But it looked at the dynamic languages gaining
traction and built its own version that's tightly integrated with Java. Groovy offers programmers the ability to toss aside all the humdrum conventions of brackets and semicolons, to write simpler programs that can leverage all that existing Java code. Everything runs on the JVM. Not only that, everything links tightly to Java JARs, so you can enjoy your existing code. The Groovy code runs like a dynamically typed scripting language with full access to the data in statically typed Java objects.
Groovy programmers think they have the best of both worlds. There's all of the immense power of the Java code base with all of the fun of using closures, operator overloading, and polymorphic iteration -- not to mention the simplicity of using the question mark to indicate a check for null pointers. It's so much simpler than typing another if-then statement to test nullity. Naturally, all of this flexibility tends to create as much logic with a tiny fraction of the keystrokes. Who can't love that?
Finally, all of the Java programmers who've envied the simplicity of dynamic languages can join the party without leaving the realm of Java.
OCaml: Complex data
hierarchy juggler
Some programmers don't want to specify the types of their variables, and for them we've built the dynamic languages. Others enjoy the certainty of specifying whether a variable holds an integer, string, or maybe an object. For them, many of the compiled languages offer all the support they want.
Then there are those who dream of elaborate type hierarchies and even speak of creating "algebras" of types. They imagine lists and tables of heterogeneous types that are brought together to express complex, multileveled data extravaganzas. They speak of polymorphism, pattern-matching primitives, and data encapsulation. This is just the beginning of the complex, highly structured world of types, metatypes, and metametatypes they desire.
For them, there is OCaml, a serious effort by the programming language community to popularize many of the aforementioned ideas. There's object support, automatic memory management, and device portability. There are even OCaml apps available from Apple’s App Store.
An ideal project for OCaml might be building a symbolic math website to teach algebra.
CoffeeScript:
JavaScript made clean and simple
Technically, CoffeeScript isn't a language. It's a preprocessor that converts what you write into JavaScript. But it looks different because it's missing plenty of the punctuation. You might think it is Ruby or Python, though the guts behave like JavaScript.
CoffeeScript began when semicolon haters were forced to program in JavaScript because that was what Web browsers spoke. Changing the way the Web works would have been an insurmountable task, so they wrote their own preprocessor instead. The result? Programmers can write cleaner code and let CoffeeScript turn it back into the punctuation-heavy JavaScript Web browsers demand.
Missing semicolons are only the beginning. With CoffeeScript, you can create a variable without typing var. You can define a function without typing function or wrapping it in curly brackets. In fact, curly brackets are pretty much nonexistent in CoffeeScript. The code is so much more concise that it looks like a modernist building compared to a Gothic cathedral. This is why many of the newest JavaScript frameworks are often written in CoffeeScript and compiled.
Scala: Functional
programming on the JVM
If you need the code simplicity of object-oriented hierarchies for your project but love the functional paradigm, you have several choices. If Java is your realm, Scala is the choice for you.
Scala runs on the JVM, bringing all the clean design strictures of functional programming to the Java world by delivering code that fits with the Java class specifications and links with other JAR files. If those other JAR files have side effects and other imperative nasty headaches, so be it. Your code will be clean.
The type mechanism is strongly static and the compiler does all the work to infer types. There's no distinction between primitive types and object types because Scala wants everything to descend from one ur-object call Any. The syntax is much simpler and cleaner than Java; Scala folks call it "low ceremony." You can leave your paragraph-long CamelCase variable names back in Java Land.
Scala offers many of the features expected of functional languages, such as lazy evaluation, tail recursion, and immutable variables, but have been modified to work with the JVM. The basic metatypes or collection variables, like linked lists or hash tables, can be either mutable or immutable. Tail recursion works with simpler examples, but not with elaborate, mutually recursive examples. The ideas are all there, even if the implementation may be limited by the JVM. Then again, it also comes with all the ubiquity of the Java platform and the deep collection of existing Java code written by the open source community. That's not a bad trade-off for many practical problems.
If you must juggle the data in a thousand-processor cluster and have a pile of legacy Java code, Scala is a great solution.
Dart: JavaScript
without the JavaScript
Being popular is not all it's cracked up to be. JavaScript may be used in more stacks than ever, but familiarity leads to contempt -- and contempt leads to people looking for replacements. Dart is a new programming language for Web browsers from Google.
Dart isn't much of a departure from the basic idea of JavaScript. It works in the background to animate all the DIVs and Web form objects that we see. The designers simply wanted to clean up the nastier, annoying parts of JavaScript while making it simpler. They couldn't depart too far from the underlying architecture because they wanted to compile Dart down to JavaScript to help speed adoption.
The highlight may be the extra functions that fold in many de facto JavaScript libraries. You don't need JQuery or any of the other common libraries to modify some part of the HTML page. It's all there with a reasonably clean syntax. Also, more sophisticated data types and syntactic shorthand tricks will save a few keystrokes. Google is pushing hard by offering open source development tools for all of the major platforms.
If you are building a dynamic Web app and are tired of JavaScript, Dart offers a clean syntax for creating multiple dancing DIVs filled with data from various Web sources.
Haskell: Functional
programming, pure and simple
For more than 20 years, the academics working on functional programming have been actively developing Haskell, a language designed to encapsulate their ideas about the evils of side effects. It is one of the purer expressions of the functional programming ideal, with a careful mechanism for handling I/O channels and other unavoidable side effects. The rest of the code, though, should be perfectly functional.
The community is very active, with more than a dozen variants of Haskell waiting for you to explore. Some are stand-alone, and others are integrated with more mainstream efforts like Java (Jaskell, Frege) or Python (Scotch). Most of the names seem to be references to Scotland, a hotbed of Haskell research, or philosopher/logicians who form the intellectual provenance for many of the ideas expressed in Haskell. If you believe that your data structures will be complex and full of many types, Haskell will help you keep them straight.
Julia: Bringing
speed to Python land
The world of scientific programming is filled with Python lovers who enjoy the simple syntax and the freedom to avoid thinking of gnarly details like pointers and bytes. For all its strengths, however, Python is often maddeningly slow, which can be a problem if you're crunching large data sets as is common in the world of scientific computing. To speed up matters, many scientists turn to writing the most important routines at the core in C, which is much faster. But that saddles them with software written in two languages and is thus much harder to revise, fix, or extend.
Julia is a solution to this complexity. Its creators took the clean syntax adored by Python programmers and tweaked it so that the code can be compiled in the background. That way, you can set up a notebook or an interactive session like with Python, but any code you create will be compiled immediately.
The guts of Julia are fascinating. They provide a powerful type inference engine that can help ensure faster code. If you enjoy metaprogramming, the language is flexible enough to be extended. The most valuable additions, however, may be Julia’s simple mechanisms for distributing parallel algorithms across a cluster. A number of serious libraries already tackle many of the most common numerical algorithms for data analysis.
The best news, though, may be the high speeds. Many basic benchmarks run 30 times faster than Python and often run a bit faster than C code. If you have too much data but enjoy Python’s syntax, Julia is the next language to learn.
