Clean Drain Valves

Have you had a large chassis washer that water was pouring into the tub and either the water ran out through the drain,
or water kept filling the tub until it looked like the door would burst open?
In either case one area to check is your drain valve.

-TURN OFF THE POWER TO THE WASHER BEFORE CHECKING DRAIN VALVE-
-THE HIGH VOLTAGE CAN KILL YOU!-

Turn off the washer power and open the front panel of your washer. Sometimes you have to take off the whole panel and sometimes there is a small panel on the bottom front that can be removed.
The drain valve sits either directly beneath the tub on some brands, or it sits a few inches below the tub as there is a short hose to the drain valve on other brands. 

Typically there is a pipe clamp holding the drain valve on the hose or basket.
Loosen the clamp and either remove the hose or remove the drain valve.
Sometimes just removing the hose on certain models will allow you to see a bunch of junk sticking out.
Inside you can see a bunch of junk. It might be lint, mop strings, bra underwires, pens, and coins.
Clean out the debris and reconnect the drain valve or hoses and give the washer a try.
Taking out the debris will allow the drain valve to open or close appropriately and solve the water problem you are having. If the problem persists then you probably need a new valve.

Dan Naumann

Dan Naumann joined the LaundryCares Foundation as Executive Vice President in July 2018. His responsibilities extend to the day-to-day operation of the foundation as well as working to scale up LaundryCares’ governance, budgeting and committee activities.

 Dan comes to LaundryCares Foundation following a long and successful career in the self-service laundry industry. For more than 25 years, Naumann built a diverse organization including: a commercial laundry equipment distributorship: one of the nation’s largest independent apartment laundry management companies; one of the largest chains of laundromats in the U.S. as well as a digital marketing agency focused on helping small businesses grow. During this time, Dan earned a tremendous reputation for business development and taking great care of customers.

 This career in laundry was highlighted by volunteering for the betterment of the industry. Dan served on the Coin Laundry Association Board of Directors for 13 years including service as the organization’s Chair of the Board. He earned several industry awards recognizing his contributions. Naumann was also a stalwart volunteer for the Wisconsin Self-Service Laundry Association for more than 25 years. In the course of his business career, Dan also supported many nonprofits in his hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Should You Charge To Access Your Laundromat Wi-Fi?

Internet use is something that has become a necessity in today’s world because people use the internet for everything, especially at laundromats, where it’s not uncommon for students to do their homework, parents to complete work tasks, or to video chat with family members. 

The big question is should you charge your laundromat customers to use your laundromat Wi-Fi? In this article we will answer this question and offer your insight into if you should charge for Wi-Fi or not. 

When charging for Wi-Fi Makes Sense 

Charging for Wi-Fi makes sense, especially if your laundromat gets a lot of foot traffic and people are spending more than one hour at a time while they do their laundry. 

Besides generating a passive stream of income for your business, charging to use the Wi-Fi will also discourage squatters, or people who stay at your laundromat all day just to use the Wi-Fi. 

Although charging people to use your business Wi-Fi is a good idea, the reality is that offering your tenants free Wi-Fi is also beneficial because customers who enjoy free Wi-Fi often spend more money in the business. 

Free Wii Is a Marketing Opportunity 

Yes, free Wi-Fi can offer a variety of benefits to your customers but what’s most important of all is that it can also bring your business a marketing boost because businesses that offer free Wi-Fi often get listed favorably in local directories and mobile apps that customers are using. 

Instead of just offering your customers free Wi-Fi, you can also brand your Wi-Fi connection with your business name and set up your website as a splash page that your customers will see first when they access your Wi-Fi connection. 

Free Wi-Fi can also be used effectively to generate more reviews for your business, prompt more sharing on social media and so much more. 

Ultimately the decision to offer free vs paid Wi-Fi is up to you, but the reality is that offering your customers free Wi-Fi offers a lot of benefits that will attract more attention to your business and help it to grow.

Speed Queen & Huebsch Manuafacturing Dates

 

All manufacturers include a date code on their machine id tags so you know how old the machines are. All companies have their "legacy" systems that don't follow the current system, however if you have an Alliance branded washer or dryer from the last 10-20 years you should be able to use this system for Huebsch, Speed Queen, and other Alliance brands.

Look for an ID sticker on the inside of the door, somewhere around the rim of the door on the front panel, top of the washer or dryer cabinet, or on the upper back of the machine.. 

In just about every case, the serial number will be 10 numeric digits. When you have identified the serial number, you can use the following to decode the information: 
A. first two digits of the serial number indicate the year of manufacture 
B. third and fourth digits are the month of manufacture

Lint Switch Switch

 If you have a dryer where the lint switch error keeps popping up even though the lint drawer is closed you might have a broken lint drawer switch.
There are lots of different types of lint drawer switches.
Some are magnetic and the outside front cover of the lint drawer makes a connection and shuts the switch allowing the dryer to start. A lot of lint switches are a push buttons that get pushed inside their holder when the lint drawer is slid inside the cabinet and a diagonal piece of metal or plastic attached to the lint drawer pushes the button in to start the dryer. In the example posted here the lint switch is a metal strip that when pushed backwards closes a button switch and that allows the dryer to start.

How do you change these switches?
Lets show the metal strip version commonly found on ADC and Maytag dryers:

On the screen you will see a rotating message saying something akin to "Lint Access Open."

This what this kind of switch looks like. It is usually attached to the side of the lint drawer about 6-8 inches from the front of the lint drawer. Sometimes it is in the back of the lint drawer and you access it via the back panel of the dryer cabinet.
It is a metal strip attached to a button switch and when the strip is pushed backwards by the lint drawer it presses the button and closes the circuit. The switch has a positive and negative lead.

Below are pictures of a new switch and a broken switch.

To change the switch:
1. take out the lint drawer
2. wipe off any lint from the sides of the walls where the lint drawer is kept and locate two screws/bolts  like these.
They are usually phillips head bolts but not always

3. locate the bolts and nuts on the opposite side of the lint drawer that are holding the switch assembly in place
(see bolt coming through panel in foreground with no nut on it in the picture above)

4. use a screwdriver and or pliers (or both) to remove the nuts and get the protective panel off of the switch the whole assembly should come loose

5. remove the positive and negative leads from the upper and lower blade connection of the switch

6. use a screwdriver and or pliers (or both) to remove the nuts and get the protective panel off of the switch

7.  unfasten the screws until the switch comes out (it doesn't take much)

8. install new switch inside protective switch cover and reverse the process described above. Make sure the switch is installed so when the lint drawer is closed the metal strip pushes the button and closes the circuit allowing the dryer to start

9. tighten nuts and/or any screws to fasten the switch cover back to the lint drawer

10. re-install lint drawer and test

Once you do this repair once it should only take you about 15 minutes to do it the next time.
